HOSTS FIRST BENCH REST RIFLE MATCH
IN NEARLY 17 YEARS
The Sierra Desert Gun Club hosted a bench rest rifle match on Saturday, July 30
at the club’s shooting facility.
This facility is part of the major shooting range operated by the
Ridgecrest Gun Range Association
on South Brown Road.
The day dawned relatively cool and cloud free with the temperature rising to
about 90 degrees before the match ended.
Ten competitors registered to fire a variety of rifles with which they wanted to
test their shooting skills and the accuracy of their rifles and ammunition.
The categories available included .22 rimfire in both iron sight and scope sight;
and centerfire rifles in both iron sight and scope sight divisions.
Unfortunately, not enough competitors signed up for the iron sight divisions,
so the two scope sighted rifle categories were the only ones fired for record.
The winners of all awards are listed below.
Scores are the sum of the smallest of two 5 shot groups fired at 50 yards and 100 yards.
.22 RIMFIRE SCOPE DIVISION:
Bob Gould - 1.105 inch 1st Place
Dave Ciaramitaro - 1.235 inch 2nd
Ron Swor - 1.242 inch 3rd
Elvy Hopkins - 1.373 inch 4th
Phil Archibald - 1.716 inch 5th
CENTERFIRE SCOPE DIVISION
Phil Archibald - 0.657 inch 1st Place
Ron Swor - 0.933 inch 2nd (tie)
Dave Ciaramitaro - 0.933 inch 2nd (tie)
Gary Speegle - 1.169 inch 4th
Frank Gonseth - 1.702 inch 5th
All of the shooters were pleased with the gun club’s new covered firing line
and were enthusiastic about having a place to shoot again.
The club’s former range was located on the NAWCWD China Lake
and has been closed since 1991.
The construction of the covered firing line was financed by two grants from the NRA Foundation that totaled nearly $18,000
