The SDGC held our Basic
Rifle Marksmanship School on Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2008. We lost
the ability to hold this school in 1991 when the Navy constructed a new hanger
in line with our range, and our range and club house on the station were shut
down for good. We are now ready to offer this annual event on our new
range, although on a smaller scale than before, since we will have to limit our
student number to 20 as opposed to the 50 that we could handle before.

Some
of the work done
Target
anchors were placed for conventional NRA paper pistol targets at 25 yards and 50 yards.

Twelve target racks, each accommodating 10 targets, were installed on the
small-bore rifle metallic silhouette range. These were installed at 40 meters, 60
meters, 77 meters and 100 meters. The course of fire includes chickens at 40
meters, pigs at 60 meters, turkeys at 77 meters and rams at 100 meters.

An NRA Foundation grant was used to
construct a concrete firing line pad 12 feet wide by 182 feet long. The firing
line is be covered by a wood shade structure designed to withstand 90 mile per
hour winds. The range is now open on Saturday mornings from 8:00 until 11:00,
with a SDGC certified range master in control. Qualified SDGC members may use
the range at other unscheduled times.
